4 signs your association needs a new learning management system

As your continuing education program grows and evolves, you need technology that grows with you. Here are four clear signs it’s time for a new learning management system.

Your continuing education program is critically important to the success of your association. In fact, according to the 2018 Member Education and Career Development Report, 85 percent of members look to associations for professional development opportunities.

But if you don’t have a modern learning management system (LMS) in place, it will become increasingly difficult to meet and exceed the evolving learning needs of your members. And if you aren’t responsive to your members’ needs, you just might lose them when it’s time to renew their membership.

With these ideas in mind, here are four sure signs it’s time for a new LMS.

1. Your LMS isn’t keeping up with your online learning program strategy.

You have great plans for your continuing education program. You know the experience you want to provide your members. But your current LMS is not flexible enough to support your growing and evolving program.

You need an LMS that can grow with you and support your online learning program over time to meet your members’ needs. For example, you might want to offer on-demand learning now and then offer live streaming of in-person events next year.

2. Your online learning program is a snooze.

You know it, and you hear it from your members: Your online learning program simply isn’t very appealing. It’s boring. You need to provide a more interactive experience.

If you think about it, one of the key elements that makes your on-site events appealing is interactivity: talking with other attendees, asking questions, making comments. Interactivity can be brought to virtual learning experiences as well. Look for a system that supports activities including Q&A via chat, polling, surveys, and online networking.

3. Your LMS is too difficult to use.

Your staff spends too much time uploading and organizing content. And, your members have trouble finding the content they need.

It’s time to look for an LMS that streamlines and simplifies manual tasks to free your learning staff’s time so they can focus more on delivering the right content to your members at the time they need it.

It’s also important to allow your members to easily find content. Look for an LMS that allows your staff to easily tag and categorize content so your members can quickly find the specific content they’re seeking.

4. Your LMS doesn’t “talk” to your association management software (AMS).

You want to create an easy, seamless, and complete experience for your learners and your team. But to see all of your member data and execute processes for your learning program, you have to move back and forth between your LMS and your AMS. Your members also have to move between the two systems to log in, change their contact information, and view learning content.

To create an easy, seamless, and complete experience for your learners and your team, your LMS should integrate with the system in which you manage your membership data, your AMS. Be sure to check that the LMS you are considering will integrate with your AMS.
